How does chemotherapy suppress a person's immune system?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Lowers WBC counts: Chemotherapy slows down the production of white blood cells (WBC) for a few days which makes patient susceptible to catch infection. This effect on blood cells is short lived, such that most patients recover in 3-4 weeks and so does their immunity. By and large it is a minor problem and can be safely monitored by an oncologist/specialist in the use of Chemotherapy.
