Transverse myelitis: Transverse myelitis is an inflammatory problem affecting the spinal cord. There is more and more research being done about isolated transverse myelitis. Standard therapy usually involves high dose steroids before proceeding to chemotherapy, and the myelitis center at johns hopkins has had good experience with the use of ivig. Check out their website for further information and good luck.

Take the pills!: You seem to be describing transverse myelitis. Anti-inflammatory medicines by mouth or IV are the best way to quickly protect the spinal cord and hopefully restore function. Sometimes other immune therapies like plasmapharesis, ivig, or Rituxan (rituximab) may help. A stem cell transplant is a risky and grueling treatment that has never been shown to help transverse myelitis and actually may cause it!
