Truth is, any age.: Lifting light weights is OK at any age, provided that the amount of weight is appropriate for the person lifting it. Where people get in trouble is trying to lift too much, too fast. For a healthy physique, one does NOT need to lift the heaviest weights possible. Start with light weights, and SLOWLY work up. Children don't gain much muscle mass until pubertal testosterone kicks in. Go easy.
