A member asked:

Why are fiber type powders like psyllium or metamucil not preferred over opiod agonists for improving acute diarrhea?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Mistaken: Psyllium and metamucil would not generally be preferred agents for acute diarrhea. Loperamide - an opioid agonist - is generally preferred unless you have a specific type of diarrhea which would be better treated with another specific agent.
