Need more info: Congestion at this age can be very common. To determine the cause, a complete history and evaluation would be necessary. It is important to determine if the runny nose has been since birth or only during certain periods of time. Family history can also play a role. Consult with your pediatrician at the next visit for an exam and discussion of safe products to use to clear the mucus.

Always ?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.

M.D. visit: I would suggest gentle suctioning with nasal saline as well. Infants at this age often have multiple infections during the first years of life. If there is thick drainage, fever, tugging at his ear or excessive irritability, a visit to your physician is indicated. The nasal passages may become infected and if there is thick drainage for more than 10 days, a course of antibiotics can be discussed.
