Maybe: The association between autism spectrum disorders and environmental toxins is clearly more than just a theory. However, the exact culprit(s) remain unclear. Associations exist to lead, mercury and even diesel exhaust.

Caveat emptor: The illnesses known to be caused by lead and mercury in children are totally unlike pervasive develemental disorder / autism. There are fringe practitioners and crooked labs that will diagnose "heavy metal poisoning" in anyone and offer a host of unproven remedies. There are unknowns here, but don't let your caring or even a sense of guilt make your a target.
