Prolactinoma?: Women may have milky discharge associated with breast pain during pregnancy. Outside pregnancy milky discharge can indicate that the pituitary gland produces too much of the hormone prolactin, which stimulates the breasts to produce milk. A simple blood test can reveal if prolactin levels are elevated. If so, imaging studies of the head will need to be done to rule out a benign tumor.
