It may be fungus: But doesn't have to be, that little toe is often subjugated to trauma from shoe and all the microtrauma can cause thickening and slight discoloration. The only way to know the true etiology is to have a sample of the nail sent for pathology. (A podiatrist or dermatologist frequently do this.)
