Newborn constipation: is very rare. Constipation is the infrequent passage of hard stools. Infants who are straining to pass a soft stool are often believed to be constipated by parents, but in reality are experiencing rectal sphincter incoordination (they push against a clenched anus). Infrequent stools with abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting or bloody discharge is cause for concern of anatomical issues.

Meconium passed?: Did your baby pass meconium after delivery? Are there some stools or none? Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If your baby passed meconium after delivery, is breastfed, and is not uncomfortable then it may be ok. Breast fed babies can go days without stools. If, however, your baby is very uncomfortable and/or has not passed meconium you need to take the baby to a doctor right away.
