Vague: I would possibly think that it has something to do with the sinus, if an upper posterior tooth. Or a minute fracture in the enamel. Did your dentist run temperature and percussion (tapping on the tooth) tests? I would possibly get another opinion or see a root canal specialist.

Necrosis: If the nerve in a specific tooth is necrotic, then there would be no sensitivity to temperature or sweets BUT the tooth may hurt with percussion or not even hurt at all. More info is needed to diagnose you properly... if your dentist is stumped, please see an endodontist.
