Not a cyst: There are 3 broad reasons only for (anemia) low blood counts: 1) bleeding (loss,) 2) failure to make enough red blood cells (e.g., bone marrow suppression/failure), 3) hemolytic diseases (destruction of red blood cells.) In a reproductive age woman (menstruating) blood loss is almost always the answer. Iron supplements can help, sometimes other medical/hormonal or surgical treatments.

He doesn't know ??: The diagnosis of iron deficiency is usually not difficult. It can be done by simple blood tests. I commend your doctor's honesty, but question his acumen (if you are accurately and fully reporting his assessment). Menstrual blood loss is most common cause of iron deficiency anemia in U.K., even among women who report light menses. Ovarian cyst does not cause iron deficiency. Rx is iron supplement
