Cold sores: Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Cold sores are indeed contagious, and can be spread by contact such as kissing or sharing eating utensils. They are contagious until they crust over. Like any viral infection, the sores can develop up to 2 weeks after infection. Your husband should see his medical doctor to find out if there is a reason he is developing so many cold sores.

See below: Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus(HSV)-Type 1. The virus can cause painful blisters and swelling of the lip. After the painful swelling is gone the virus still remains alive in nerves near spinal cord. Some people will experience recurrent outbreaks of HSV, always at the same spot. A cold sore occurring in a new location may or may not be a reinfection from your partner.

Yes: Cold sores are cause by the HSV-1 virus, and can be passed on via kissing, etc. things like stress, illness, lack of sleep, or anything that lowers your immune system can cause a flare, which is not a new infection, but the old infection resurfacing. We are never truly free of the virus once we get it, but you are in good company, since most adults do test + for HSV-1 antibodies!
