Drusen deposits: AMD is diagnosed, at the early stage, by the presence of drusen (small yellow deposits) on the macular surface. Usually this is asymptomatic. But over time the deposits enlarge and block the visual field. Also blood vessels in the retina can become leaky and cause degeneration of retina cells. Basically, the diagnosis is via opthalmoscope or similar instruments.
