Varies: For a woman having her first baby the cervix usually begins to soften around 30 to 34 weeks. Most women do not dilate more than a centimeter or two until they are in labor. But after having a vaginal delivery, the cervix can easily be several centimeters dilated as early as 30 to 34 weeks. None of this applies when there is premature or preterm labor.
