Hormonal: if you are child bearing, the first and foremost test with irregular bleeding is a pregnancy test. If this is negative, there are many other causes to this which needs further hormonal and gynecological workup. Please consult your primary or OB/GYN in particular.

Perhaps: General blood work, urine , pregnancy test, ultrasounds are all possibilities. They will also perform a complete history and physical. Depending on what they find birth control pills can help with the irregular periods. Hard to say until the tests are performed. Good luck

Expect: A formal examination including gynecologic exam/Pap smear. A urine pregnancy test is usually done. Other lab testing that is done are: thyroid function tests, liver function tests, blood counts and coagulation studies. If you have signs that you have too much male hormones(androgens) other hormonal tests may be order too, to evaluate for polycystic ovarian syndrome.
