There are more nerve: cells in the GI track than the brain! Coordination of peristalsis (rhythmic propulsive contractions that move the digested food forward ) is controlled by a web of nerve cells called the myenteric and meissner's plexus. It is not surprising, in retrospect, that some of us think with our stomachs.
