A member asked:

What does independent living offer that an apartment does not?

More help: An independent living setting may provide some meals, a health clinic, transportation to grocery stores and banks for example and activities for all the residents to participate in. It may also be attached to an assisted living and nursing home so those will be available if and when you may need them.
