A member asked:

What is the solution that is taken prior to colonoscopy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Polyethylene glycol: Golytley is a solution of polyethylene glycol used to help cleanse the bowel. As the liquid enters the small bowel its hypertonic nature causes an outflow of fluid from the wall of the small bowel into the lumen. As this fluid passes into the colon it cleanses the fecal content so that within 24 hrs. the bowel is relatively clean enough for a scope to be passed and pathology visualized.
