What is the importance of the pectinate muscles in our heart?

Pectinate muscles: It is thought that they enable the atria to react to varying volume loads without a lot of change in pressure. When the atrial muscle hypertrophies such as in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, atrial pressure may be much higher per unit volume than in the normal heart.
