SEVERAL oral meds: The hormone, testosterone, contributes to acne. Skin bacteria and overproduction of oil (sebum) also are associated. Oral antibiotics can control bacteria and oral Accutane can be prescibed by a dermatolgist. Recent studies indicate that certain dietary factors, including carbohydrate-rich foods — such as bread, bagels and chips (w/ increased blood sugar) may contribute to acne, as well.

Many options.: There are many prescription options for acne - too many to summarize here in 400 characters. A dermatologist will evaluate you and determine which ones will work best in your particular situation. That's why they require a prescription - because a professional has to prescribe them for you.
