Needs an exam: Can be everything from itchy eyes to infection to foreign body to corneal abrasion, so have him checked by his doctor.

Eye rubbing: Your description could be habitual or due to eye irritation. The irritation could be from the rubbing itsel, allergies, blepharitis, or many other causes. I doubt it is due to the fruit but it is possible. See an eye doctor for further evaluation.
