A member asked:

What is ointment? how it is made that makes it different from a cream or lotion?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Oil Vs. Water: These are similar in many respects but contain different amounts of oil or petrolatum and water. Ointments have higher oil content as you would expect (75% or more), creams about 50/50 oil to water, and lotions even less oils. The amounts do vary with the manufacturer. In winter many patients prefer the ointments, depending upon how much body surface is to be treated...in summer creams or lotions.
