Bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) zidovudine: The earliest effective treatment (early 1980s) was sulfa-trimethoprim (Bactrim®) to prevent Pneumocysts pneumonia in people with advanced immune deficiency. The first anti-HIV drug was zidovudine, originally called azidothymidine or AZT, which became available in the late 1980s. Used alone, it slowed HIV progression and sometimes improved AIDS dementia, but only a little and not for long.
