20 week sonogram: Fetal sonograms are done at around 20 weeks to assess the baby's anatomy, make sure the baby is growing normally, check where the baby is lying in the uterus, check where the placenta is located, check the volume of fluid surrounding the baby, check the baby's heart beat, estimate the baby's weight, and so on. Although the baby's sex may be determined, some facilities do not give this information.
