Can be many causes: It would represent an emergency especially if it's from a retinal detachment, central retinal vein occlusion, central retinal artery occlusion, and multiple sclerosis (optic neuritis) or stroke in the visual cortex. Unless it's a nonseeing eye to begin with, you definitely want to be seen by an eye doctor for evaluation and management. The cause behind the pitch black view must be treated ASAP.
