What causes gout flare ups?

Many: They can be caused by medications, kidney function and other medical reasons, hereditary predisposition, and (controversially) diet. Hyperuricemia can cause the gout. The underlying cause of hyperuricemia needs to be addressed, and sometimes management with medications are necessary.

Can exercise help control my gout flare ups?

No: Gout is a genetic condition. A patient with gout has an abnormal accumulation of uric acid crystal in their joints. No amount of exercise will prevent the abnormal accumulation in the joints. The most significant preventive measure for avoidance of gout flare ups is diet. Stay away from foods high in uric acid like red meat.

Can taking buspirone cause a gout flare?

Dr. Loren Lewis
Occupational Medicine 35 years experience
Probably not: There is nothing in the medical literature that Buspirone directly causes a gout flare. Neither epocrates nor uptodate list gout as an adverse effect. There could be an indirect relationship in that Buspirone could adversely affect kidney function and this could indirectly reduce clearance of uric acid, thus allowing it to build up.
