Usually bacteria: The lining of the uterus is a perfect substrate for bacteria to grow. In the lab they use blood agar to culture bacteria and the inside of the uterus is similar. Any bacteria that gets from the vagina into the uterus can begin to grow and set up an infection in the uterus. Frequently these are sexually transmitted but not always. Infection can also happen after a c/section or vaginal delivery.
