What are the effects of high blood sugar?

Several: Hi. The principle effects of hyperglycemia are dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities. Ketoacidosis is NOT an attendant phenomenon unless a sufficient degree of insulin deficiency is present. Hyperglycemia does not beget ketoacodosis - a sufficient degree of insulin deficiency does. If high enough or comorbid illnesses are present, hospitalization may be necessary; usually not, however.
