Single v. continuous: Both spinal blocks and epidurals involve injections into the spine. In a spinal block a single injection is done into the epidural space for anesthetic application. In an epidural, a catheter is placed for continuous anesthesia. A spinal block has a finite duration. The epidural lasts as long as the catheter is in place.
