Could influenza cause joint pain and, more specifically, pain in a single joint? i woke up with normal flu symptoms and aching right ankle.

Possible: Common flu symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, joint pain etc. When the symptoms initially develop it may be possible to feel pain in a single joint. If the pain is due to flu the pain my progress to other joints.

Yes, but: pain will likely encompass multiple joints and muscles over time. Ibuprofen or naproxen (Advil/Aleve) tend to help pain due to fever and inflammation. If this single joint pain doesn't resolve with these mild treatments and the pain DOESN'T include more joints, I'd be concerned about infection in the joint. Otherwise, symptomatic treatment, fluids, rest - & flu vaccine for next season.
