Test, not smell: Hi. It's extremely easy to differentiate with a blood glucose meter. Test, and look at the result. Since you're 20, and asking about low blood sugar, I'll assume you're type 1 diabetic on insulin, although I hate to guess. Diabetes service dogs can detect hypoglycemia by smell, but we can't. Use your blood glucose meter and keep your diabetes well controlled. Good luck!

Taste not smell: Diabetic patients, generally type I, with really elevated blood sugar can go into diabetic ketoacidosis and the smell of acetone may be detected on their breath. One would know they are ill long before the smell can be detected. Low blood sugar does not have an odor detectable by humans. Really sweet urine may suggest high blood sugar levels.

They have different: symptoms, and neither involves a particular odor. Check the American Diabetes Assoc. website for more info. The best way to differentiate is to check your blood sugar with a simple and easy finger stick test.
