Phenol is toxic: The most common side effect of phenol throat spray is numbness of the mouth, tongue, and cheeks. Repeated or prolonged contact with phenol may cause irritation and chemical burns. Inhalation of phenol vapor may cause lung edema. Phenol overexposure may also have harmful effects on the central nervous system and heart.
