I recomend an exam: by an experienced Orthopedist( some specialise in only knees).X-Rays/MRI may be necessary to arrive or confirm a diagnosis.A management/treatment plan will follow. The possibilities are many and include sprain/strain,bursitis,tendinitis,arthritis,etc

Hard to say for sure: Without further detailed questions such as which side it hurts on and if the pain radiates, how long it lasts,if it is made worse ever by movement or walking,if you ever hear a noise associated with the pain, and if there is swelling with it?Could be many things such as arthritis, meniscus problems, or ligamentous issues.A thorough exam with your doc would be most helpful for diagnosis and treatment
