Fixation, fear(s): quite possible. All interpretation(s) of senses are in brain/mind, not the nerve impulses coming up from our body (e.g. nose, etc.). Our mind is constantly working to make sense of issues & protect us from danger(s); always looking for patterns which fit both external clues & multiple internal concerns/memories, thus suggestible, a reflection of intelligence; may also be mislead, esp. short term.

It could be neurolog: I would advise you discuss this with your physicians. It could be neurologic like an olefactory (That means relating to the nose) issue - even whether your are smelling this related to how the brain perceives smells.
