A member asked:

Is coughing and chocking on own saliva a symptom or a part of dementia?? ( my grandfather was diagnosed 2yrs ago, wanna educate myself)

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: on whether one has an acute infection with productive cough, in which case it is not a concern to want to examine the nature of the material coughed up, or if one does it regularly in the absence of acute productive cough, which can be a symptom of dementia.
