Many causes: Nystagmus, which is an involuntary back and forth or up and down repetitive movement of the eyes, has a wide variety of causes. Any new onset nystagmus should be promptly evaluated by an ophthalmologist or neuro-ophthalmologist since there can be significant problems that cause it. Most cases of nystagmus are not severe, but they can be difficult to treat.
