Yes, though: The rash of shingles is unique enough for the seasoned clinician to diagnose it clinically ( one side only, follows a specific "dermatome", presence of vesicles on a red base) To definitively diagnose it, a vesicle would have to be broken and the fluid as well as a brushing of the edge of the broken lesion can be sent for viral culture. Blood testing is not the definitive way to diagnose it.
