Yes, timing matters: It really depends on how far along you are because the tests detect a hormone that is doubling every 2 to 3 days in the early days of a pregnancy. The tests are more likely to be negative early on. Also the tests are more sensitive when your urine is more concentrated, so first thing in the morning is a good time to check.
