What would cause serve lower back pain to the point of immobility, where even lifting my head would cause horrible pain? x-rays didn't show anything.

Need examination: Are you currently pregnant? Is there a fever, headache, sweating/chills? If you haven't been seen by a doctor then, your symptoms need to be evaluated more carefully. Obviously, someone sent you for X-rays as opposed to CT or MRI so that tells me something. At any rate, if pregnant your back pain for sure is going to be due at least in part to that situation.
