Guidelines: now recommend PAP smears at age 21, regardless if one has had sex or not. As far as establishing care, it might not be a bad idea to get your daughter to see any doctor to have them discuss the potential consequences of having sex including infections and pregnancy. This would also be an appropriate time to educate on safe sex and birth control options, coming from a health care provider.

Is your daughter 16 : or 18 ? Who needs a GYN exam for pelvic pain & irregular menses ? At 18 you sign all medico- legal forms even if on parents' insurance. In some states minors can seek birth control & OB/GYN care without parental permission. Planned Parenthood, pediatricians, family medicine doctors, adolescent specialists & GYN's educate teens on safe sex.& test for STI's. All, even PP, advocate abstinence at 16.
