Several ways: On physical exam the examiner can observe the pulsations in the neck. This requires some skill and not all physicians are experienced in this. A Doppler test can evaluate the flow in the internal jugular veins. Computed tomography can also evaluate the venous flow when contrast is injected. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Jugular vein: The jugular vein can be examined by physical exam, venous ultrasound doppler, Cat can or MR with venous phase. The gold standard would be venous doppler.
