OTC Acid Blockers: 44 yo man with "gastritis" often. Patient did not provide any other description of "gastritis". If patient means "uncomfortable or painful feeling in the pit of his stomach", a good way is to try over-the-counter acid blockers, such as Prilosec OTC, Prevacid (lansoprazole) 24HR, or Zegerid OTC. Follow package instructions. See a doctor promptly because it could be more serious than just H. pylori, at age 44.

Gastritis: If you indeed have inflammation of the stomach lining, you must avoid alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, nicotine and take something like prilosec daily for a few weeks. You can also take an antacid like maalox or gelusil as needed. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a gastroenterologist.
