Likely normal anatom: exam would confirm but sounds like you may have discovered one of two structures of the normal chest wall, depending on where you are exactly talking about. the xiphoid process can often be felt in normal persons and can be tender. also if the area of concern is high up on the strernum there is a structure call the sternal angle that can be felt in normal chest. good pic found on internet.
