Acute or chronic?: Acute bronchitis is caused by an infection in the airways and is usually diagnosed by a doctor once an evaluation is done. Sometimes a sputum culture can help determine the bacteria causing the infection. Chronic bronchitis, a form of copd, is diagnosed by a physician evaluation and pulmonary function testing.
