Virus: Sounds like a mild upper respiratory viral infection. I usually take the generic version of Dayquil and Nyquil when I have these symptoms. Ibuprofen for pain is also helpful. Taking Grandma's advice is good too - chicken soup, honey in hot tea, Vicks vapor rub!

Tonsillitis: It sounds like a tonsilar infection, probable viral as described. Rest, increase your fluids, salt water gargles, soft foods. Continue with the dr. in follow-up and for a re-evaluation if not improving in time.
