Not specific: D-dimer is positive when the clotting system in the body has been activated. A whole host - like dozens and dozens - of conditions can cause the D-dimer to be positive. So, that test can't tell us much, but it should be interpreted in the context of an entire clinical picture. Hope that makes sense.
