Hiccups : are caused by an irritation of the Phrenic nerve which controls the diaphragm. There are many, many causes for this condition which can last for minutes, hours, days or much longer. Most "cures" involve holding the diaphragm still for a few moments as by holding ones breath or by drinking water.
