spasm: Involuntary spasm of diaphragm. No sure fire cute but lots of "wives tales." there are some medicines as well. A gastro or pulmonary doc may be able to help.

Phrenic nerve stimul: Hiccup is the sudden spasm of diaphragm , often caused by GI problems or phrenic nerve irritation or stimulation most but not all causes are not serious although serious causes such as uremia exist.

Hiccups: Common causes can be overeating, sudden temperature changes, eating too fast, spicey foods or alcohol or dry bread or carbonated beverages, laughing, nicotine or sedative drugs. Refer to my previous answer for remedies.
