What can cause sudden swelling of the upper left part of my chest (outside rib cage)?

Possibly an Insect--: bite, seems the most plausible explanation; other would include a trauma to the affected site. Both these would cause other symptoms as well. Suggest you see your PCP for a detailed History and an Examination and possible need for investigations; All these elements would be required to provide you with the answers you seek. Good Luck.
