Worms: Although Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) can cause extreme itching -usually at night- most crawling sensations in the anal area are not parasitic. usually caused by pruritus ani, a condition generally caused from poor hygiene, or allowing soiling of the anal area to persist after bowel movements.
